How could I leave this little squash at the store?  It was perfectly shaped and ready for some butter and brown sugar…soooo yummy!

I thought I’d better take advantage of the the STILL freezing winter and get my comfort foods eaten before it starts warming up!  And there was no better option than a lunch date with this orange beauty…

….baked to perfection and thoroughly enjoyed!

While eating, I was thumbing through Good Housekeeping’s March 2008 issue and came across this delicious-sounding recipe, with butternut squash as the key ingredient!  Perfect!  I thought I’d share it….and give it a whirl myself this weekend…

WINTER VEGETABLE CHOWDER
dsc06379.jpg

  • 6 med leeks (3lbs)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 4 med stalks celery, choppped
  • 3 med parsnips, peeled and chopped
  • 2 med red potatoes (1 lb), cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 2 cups butternut squash cut into 1/2 inch pieces (from a 2 lb squash)
  • 2 cans vegetable broth (14 to 14.5 oz each)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp chopped fresh thyme leaves plus thyme spring for garnish
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 cup half-n-half or light cream

1.  Cut off roots and trim dark-green tops from leeks.  Discard any tough outer leaves.  Cut each leek lengthwise in half, then crosswise into 1/2 inch-wide-slices.  Rinse leeks in cold water, swish to remove sand.  With hands, transfer leeks to colander, leaving sand in bottom of bowl.  Repeat rinsing and draining, several times, until all sand is removed.  Drain well.

2.  In a 6-quart saucepot, heat oil on medium-high until hot.  Add leeks, celery, and parsnips, and cook 10-12 minutes or untill all vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally.

3.  Add potatoes, squash, broth, water, thyme, 1 tsp salt and 3/4 tsp coarsely ground black pepper; heat to boiling on medium-high.  Cover; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer about 13 minutes or until vegetables are all done!  Sounds yummy!  Although I may add more squash than the recipe calls for…

Look at what arrived in the mail today!  Oooh, I just love love love these icy little glass squares.  And these are the heavy, sturdy, perfect kind…ideal for making paper weights and magnets.   I may even try my hand at some pendants…
dsc06071.jpgdsc06075.jpgdsc06093.jpg

I have made these for quite some time now, but only of the circle variety, so I am excited!   They will debut in my new shop….more info to come….

I have been on a paper high!  Doing everything from scrapbooking to stamping!  It has been therapy for me since the weather hasn’t allowed me to exert engery outdoors, which has been hard…this winter has really been horrible!  I can’t wait for the first 60 degree day….heck, even 50 degrees sounds balmy.

I’m still working on that Summer in the City quilt…..someday soon it will be completed!!

Have a happy Tuesday (a sad Tuesday for me now that Nip/Tuck is over…it’s been my guilty pleasure since it started..)

A Beautiful Birth Day!

It looks like I have candy trees in the front yard!  Like I could eat them and they would be sweet.  It was funny to hear the branches chiming when the birds flew away once I came around with my camera…dsc05589.jpgdsc05588.jpgdsc05544.jpgdsc05579.jpg

What a beautiful day to have a baby!  Yes, it’s freezing outside, but look at the ice covered branches and the sunshine!  It is absolutely breathtaking, in my opinion.

My good friend, Stephanie, is having her baby today!  He’s probably being introduced to the world right at this very moment–how exciting, I can not wait to meet him.  Someday I will tell him (when he’s old enough to care!) what a perfectly beautiful, pristine winter day he was born on.   His name is Roman….

In light of Roman’s birth, I racked my brain for a gift to give her and her new family…….. and decided on something handmade (of course!).

I made her a batch of 75 birth announcements…
dsc05468.jpgdsc05472.jpgdsc05600.jpgdsc05599.jpg

all she needs to do is snap a photo and attach.  I boxed them all up with returned address labels on the envelopes, adhesive for the pictures and the cards are ready to go…I just need to get to the hospital to get his stats!

Speaking of which, I just got off the phone!  He’s here!  Gotta go get my first peek!  Happy Tuesday!!  And, Happy Birthday, Roman!

UPDATE: We just got back from the hospital! Here he is…cuddling with his mama…and me and Lilyana! So sweet!  Congratulations!

Snowed In = Some Scrap Cleaning

What an icky day!  Weather wise, it’s cold, dreary, rainy, snowy, icy… and the roads are bad news!  But, it is beautiful with a fresh layer of snow on the trees–I love that.

So, being held hostage at home can either be a bad or good thing…I tried to turn it into a good thing by cleaning/organizing my scrapbooking room (no small project).  I have a habit of going in there to scrap and spend hours sifting through papers, pictures and ribbon…and then i leave the room without one single layout to show for it!  The only thing I’ve accomplished is making a mess!!  Here’s a before shot of my work table!  Ugh!  Clutter, clutter, clutter!
scrap-room.jpg

I have quite the collection of ribbon…it’s probably my most favorite scrapbook/papercrafting/sewing embellishment–I love it!  So, I have rows and piles of it on shelves…
scrap-room-2.jpg

in buckets…
scrap-room-4.jpg

in pasta strainers…
scrap-room-3.jpg

and on towel holders!
scrap-room-1.jpg

I should probably have one place for all of it, but that would be too easy, right?  Besides, I like being able to see ribbon all over the room no matter which direction I’m looking…

Well, I got most of the room spiffed up and ready for creating….
scrap-room-5.jpg
But, now it’s too late in the day to start! It feels so good to have it more organized though! The after pics make me feel so uncluttered!
scrap-room-6.jpg

My husband tells me that Archiver’s must be out of business, because the entire store is in my room!
scrap-room-7.jpg
I hope to get in there for the fun stuff soon! I have too many ideas swimming in my head and never enough time!
I’d love to hear about or see other creative spaces out there…..It’s always fun to share storage and organizational tips!

Mini Shopping Spree

Lilyana and I woke up this morning, deciding it was a good day to get in some shopping!  Of course when it comes to us, NO DAY is a bad day for shopping!!

I went to Target this morning to pick up some after V-Day goodies!  I looove their cute cupcake and heart items!!  I snatched up tea towels (which will be used to make something), a few vinyl tablecloths (which I plan on making waterproof totes with), frames, a plush blanket, a heart shirt for the Lil (which will be cut up and sewn into a summer dress for her), and cute “drink” tubs that I’ll use downstairs in Lil’s playroom–all for half off!  I love after V-day sales!
dsc05343.jpg

I came home after Target to get Lil and off we went for more shopping!  I even got in some thrifting at Goodwill, which I enjoy (on most days).  I almost screeched out loud when I saw this darling twirly gauze dress, handmade from Mexico…too cute!  Can’t wait to get this on her this summer!
dsc05176.jpg

Then it was off to Gymboree because

1) I had a coupon

 2) I love tulips

3) Everything was an additional 20% off

dsc05352.jpg

This little vinyl tulip tote is so cute!  I can envision her carrying this around outside, collecting bugs and dirt in it (since I fear my daughter will be a total tomboy!  And that’s ok, of course!)

And I couldn’t leave this tulip dress there!

dsc05348.jpg

Then, I had a paper urge that was so strong, it pulled me to the local scrapbooking store!  Seriously, it was a force that could not be reckoned with.  I had to give in to it.  And, so….I found this delicious “spring” type paper (among many other things) that I am in lust with.
dsc05355.jpg
I am going to save it for a “special project” that is in the works, one that I can not wait to start.  More information to come soon!!

Gonna go continue working on that Summer in the City quilt now!  Can’t wait to finish that up!  I’ll be sure to post pics when done…Happy Belated Valentines Day!

A new project…with yummy fabrics!

I just can’t stop myself!  I went shopping at Sew, Mama, Sew
and the Fat Quarter Shop.  I absolutely LOVE the Zazu line of fabrics by Tina Givens….so unique and refreshing…the chandelier’s are my favorite!  I had to get more…I have a patchwork skirt project in mind and think they will be a perfect fit for my personality and style.  dsc05096.jpg

I went through some of my other fabrics I thought might fit well…..what do you think? dsc05098.jpgdsc05101.jpgdsc05102.jpgdsc05104.jpg

and, I have to get in my favorite owls…

dsc05106.jpg

I’m thinking I may have to narrow down my selections!

I can’t wait to get started on the skirt!  I know, I know…..another project!  I can’t be the only one out there who always has several projects in the works.  I have to rotate, to keep my creative juices flowing and so I don’t get tired of one project.  I love jumping back and forth!  And, lately it seems that I can not get enough of patchwork…I love designing the layout and picking the color schemes.  I’ll post the progress…it will be my first attempt at an ankle length patchwork skirt.

And, while I was out thrifting today, I thought I’d add another project into the mix.  I was jolted by inspiration when I saw this vintage dress, with its retro colors and print!  I think it needs to be made into a handbag….or a dress for Lilyana…or…..

I’m going to ponder that one for a few days until it comes to me, but isn’t the print so much fun??  Can’t wait to cut that baby up!

Oh how i love yummy fabrics!

What a cute start to the day!  When we woke up this morning, Owen
(aka the Tibetan TerrOR) was frantic and pacing by the front windows…very excited.  dsc05051.jpg

I checked things out and couldn’t see any reason for his turmoil…dsc05050.jpg

When he would not let up, I did a closer inspection and saw….aww….these cute little morning doves perched next to eachother, in a nearby tree…trying to keep warm during our blistery cold winter day!  They were so cute and seemed so happy out there, content and peaceful.  dsc05042.jpg They made me want to cuddle in bed with my daughter and sleep in, just a little bit longer….which we did!  A perfect start to a Saturday…

Unfortunatly, those birds led me to my addiction to fabric, which…..led me to find this ADORABLE new fabric from Amy Schimler called Creatures and Critters…well, of course, I had to have it!  I plan on using it to make a pinafore for the little lady…I have found one or two tutorials on making a pinafore…but, does anyone have/or know where to find a reversible one?

Enjoy the weekend–we’ll be deep in snow, crafting and cuddling!

Summer in the City found!

I just love the versatility of fabric charm packs!  I have several from Moda, but I was searching for the Urban Chiks, Summer in the City set…as this fabric is some of my absolute favorite!  The bright colors, the birdies, the flowers…love, love, love!  I searched high and low and came up empty!  Then, one day I found a seller on ebay who had some and I snatched up 8 of them.  Now……what was I going to make with them??  dsc04999.jpg

I decided that Lilyana needed a Spring stroller blanket and I needed practice at patchwork and quilting!  I have only dabbled in the random patchwork scarf and I’m excited to give the blanket a go!  So far, I’ve played it safe and pieced together the squares at random…no fancy shapes or cuts…
dsc04994.jpg

and now I am in the process of figuring out how the border will be pieced in (did I mention that I have never done a quilt before?? Argh!! It’s a little confusing scary for me still…)
dsc04995.jpg

So, I guess the next step is to get that border figured out, plan my backing material, layer on some batting, quilt it and edge it….?  Yikes!

I did find a helpful tutorial at Cranberry Blossom that I hope to use!

Does anyone have any other suggestions for me?  Any quilting experts out there that want to add in a little something to make this easier for me?  LOL!  I’m having fun experimenting, but I am no professional, that’s for sure!

Happy winter day!  We have had quite the snow storm here!  Over a foot of snow in less than 24 hours!  WOW!  These are the days that I actually love!  It gives me a chance to cozy up to my scrapbook table or sewing machine and create.  One of my most favorite things to do is to turn something old into something new….hence this little orange sweater…

This used to be one of my favorite Fall sweaters…several years ago.  I washed it a few times in hot water and threw it in the dryer..and viola!  A new (and much smaller) felted wool sweater!

I thought it would make an adorable little girls spring cardigan, so I cut it up….added handmade apple bias trim….

used some of my favorite Amy Butler fabrics to make whimsical flower patches with random stitches…

and then i added buttons and cute grosgrain ribbon!  After several hours of fun laboring, I love how it turned out, if only Lilyana could wear it now!  I thought I’d give it a whirl on Etsy ….check it out if your interested….

I wasn’t done there!  Lilyana has a plain jane denim jacket that was crying out to be embellished!  And here is what I came up with….

I can’t wait to see her in this!  And, I look forward to making more…maybe I can try my hand at these on Etsy as well….we’ll see!

A little of what inspires me…

I wanted to start a blog in the hopes of finding others who can inspire my creativity….and I want to return the favor. I have many loves obsessions: sewing, scrapbooking, jewelry making, painting and anything vintage.

Which brings me to my most recent inspiration—Anthropologie. This store is filled with yummy colors and displays that make me want to run home and create, create, create! I love everything about this store!

My favorite little spot is the “kitchen” area…rows and rows of colorful dishes and beautiful dishtowels, aprons and potholders, OH MY!

And, don’t you just love these cute owl glasses??

I came home from Anthropologie wanting to make a citrus colored scrapbook layout thanks to these little owls…

I still have not gotten to that—yet.

Did I mention that I am a new mom to a beautiful baby girl? Just turned 3 months old! She, of course, is my ultimate inspiration…

meet Lilyana Eden

She finally fit into her Halloween outfit…never too late to be a pink kitty!
